Understanding Blogging & Social Media

Standard

Marketing and consumer behavior

Its been a year and a half since I started blogging. When I began I was a battered and bruised warrior, on a mission to recover from an accident. Today, I’m still that warrior with a weakness in one area and stronger in others. Whatever makes us weak can be complimented by increased strength developed elsewhere.

If blogging was my day job I would fire me(smile), or I would give me several warning letters! Consistency has not been something I can be marked favorably on. Instead, healing has been my all-time job, and once I accepted the position, there are benefits for the gains I have been making. You must be fully committed to whatever you pursue if you are seeking excellence.

Benchmarking against the performance of theory and others, can severely weaken one’s ability to grow when it comes to healing. An excellent doctor once admonished me by saying, “Your body knows itself. It tells you when it needs help. How can you tell it, it does not, when it shows its distress through pain and inflammation?” Thus I eventually listened to my body, giving it time to recover. With blogging I decided to listen on several publishing platforms, to understand what drives readers and followers to choose one over another.

Readers, followers, bloggers

8af7a-animal-2067456__340

Blogging is much more than sharing stories via words posted online. “One must be keen to listen to be good at blogging, because its about a conversation.” This is my understanding of blogging from my experience. Businesses have been reaching out to have this conversation. Bloggers tell a story with their reading/viewing customers, which can help influence the decision-making process. In fact, social media influencing has become a major marketing strategy across most commercial industries. Competitive advantage is gained or lost through reviews of ‘rants and raves’ ( Trip advisor ,Amazon, and others) on the customer experience — experienced!

People blog because they believe they have something they wish to share with the world. For this sharing to be effective, an audience that is willing to read and respond is necessary. Responding can take the form of ‘liking’ and that can be compared to someone listening to a singer and clapping to show their appreciation. When the audience starts singing along with the singer, its the beginning of ‘engagement’ and a beautiful conversation. The standing ovation can be associated with the sharing and commenting on the blog which stirs emotion.

Marketing and the Blogger

In marketing we learn that different markets require different strategies. Our target market will be made up of several types of consumers, and the ones we focus on will be those we believe we can convert to buyers. If our research is contaminated by bias, or misinformation, then, when the product is offered the results will dispute the research. Personal blogging can be like that.

Some bloggers will start without a clear plan. As they develop confidence in their skill, they may be guided by the topics which stimulate discussion and sharing from followers. Many times , bloggers do not see their readers and followers as consumers, and are disheartened by the results after publishing. Bloggers should have a basic marketing strategy to ‘get the ball rolling’ based on their objectives and goals.

Blogging and social media communication, requires some general understanding of marketing and consumer behavior to be effective. You don’t need to be qualified to listen , you simply need to be ‘open’ to listening. Blogs are important as stated in ‘Principles of Marketing, Kotler & Armstrong. 2006,p561. Pearson, 11th Edition’, “Blogs have voice and personality. They’re human. They come to us not from some media-genic, anchor-bot on an air-conditioned sound stage, but from an individual.” This is one of the reasons why we experience strong emotions, when bloggers use their pen, sharing their truest opinions and beliefs. When a reader takes the time to respond passionately whether in agreement or disagreement, the blogger has been effective.

In his latest article on Inc. ‘Here’s how to properly align your sales and marketing teams in 2017′, John White states, “ Social media has caused a blur in activities that are now both sales and marketing related…” As bloggers we should align our blogs (sales product) with marketing to increase our readership. When I started to think of blogging as a product I’m selling to my readers, the way I write and share took on a different meaning. My followers create a market for the words I’m ready to share!

I have found this blogging journey to be quite fascinating as I take apart the traditional thoughts and theories on marketing and consumer behavior. Social media is a dynamic communication tool, which requires ongoing participation and interaction, for the analytics to make sense!

Have I stirred a flame with embers glowing — please share your thoughts via comments. Thanks for being awesome!

A Fired-Up Bee…

Some help from William Shakespeare

Friends, Bloggers, Social Media Citizens…lend me your ears. I write to share my experiences and perspectives not to praise beBee. There are many social media sites on the internet. The good is often shared with others via blogs, so let it be with clicking on, and experiencing  beBee.

There may be a few bloggers who have different experiences from my own, but each one can choose to receive that which they wish for. From my own engagement I have found it to be the best social media experience thus far in my blogging journey. My words come from my heart and head, and they are written to be shared. Every site will share your words, but some  will use selective algorithms and systems based on their philosophy. BeBee’s philosophy is about ‘affinity’ and this is a core aspect of their platform thus sharing is not restricted to your network.

As a relatively new platform the company is building a culture in-keeping with its philosophy of inclusion, based on its actions. Yes, generally everything which is new needs to be tested, used , tweaked and adjusted, and beBee is doing that. Engagement requires more than one willing party, so from the beginning something was needed to build a new and engaging team of supporters.

The Ambassador program was established early on, for those who wish and desire to be bricklayers, and foundation builders. These Ambassadors have a core belief based on their history of engagement and interaction, and this in my opinion is ‘positive affinity’. These ambassadors and those who will be added are part of the ‘building team’ because they believe in ‘positive affinity’.

Engagement  can be positive and not be in-agreement, this is an art which ‘social media aficionados’ practice online and in their non virtual lives. Engagement can be passionate and fiery without being nasty and disrespectful. Engagement can be expressive and powerful, yet kind in delivery of the written word. Arguments and disagreements are the hallmark of diverse opinions and immense learning and fun!  Yes, my friends we will be proved by our words and willingness to fight fair, so no one feels the need to ‘block out’ those whose aim wound, with or without intent.

Indeed, with the introduction of video streaming beBee can once more distinguish itself as a trendsetter and not simply a platform geared to fulfilling its own needs without understanding the needs of its users. If you have seen the video streams you may find that sense of affinity shining through. Why should one’s professional life be a façade separate and apart from one’s social persona; a coin has two sides both different and unified into one – So too beBee and I am sure ‘others’ will follow because it makes sense.

But I am here to share my experiences and perspectives, and my poetic self, does resolve to say;

When I am asked, where would you  recommend someone to start their social media experience – the answer is beBee

Why don’t you choose a site and build a platform and place all your energies in one location, the answer is –beBee shares with everyone, and so I’ll follow their lead. They have proven their interest in sharing my words on their platform and on others.

Why don’t you just go with one of the other platforms that know their stuff, the answer is, what matters in not who exists right now but who is intent on growing and being around for my words to be shared – that’s beBee. A thought occurred to me one day recently, ‘why buy what is established as good by others when something better is being innovated which fits me.’

Why beBee, my answer is , why not beBee? Those who were here before have played innovator and forgotten how they began and why they wanted to grow. I feel creative when logging into beBee. I don’t expect perfection like that of something old, but an improved creation of what is new, with a desire for continuous evolution. I want to be social, and engaged. I want to meet others who are like minded and those who are different. I want to learn about new cultures and another language. I want to be a part of the biggest change in how we use social media to build relationships, brands, and awareness.

So yes, I am cheerful, I am happy tagging my followers, encouraging and highlighting beBee. There are naysayers who may have different perspectives, and that’s the way of the world. My heart is filled with appreciation for these humble Spaniards who have dared to take on the ‘rest of the world.’ Their social media philosophy, I heartily embrace. The Ambassador engaging support team, I am privileged to be a part of. I have accepted the baton, with a blindfold but in trust, because of my experiences. BeBee is growing… welcome and be a part of this site with me.

*** For those Shakespeare lovers, the speech by Marc Anthony in Julius Caesar is by far one of the most powerful and moving speeches written from the works of William Shakespeare. I remember each line, from that 3rd act scene 2, as I sat thinking about beBee, the ambassadors, bloggers, followers. I hope the essence of that speech resonates through my own. Those who have eyes to see and a passion to read, share and engage my words, I thank you very much!

Picture Perfect – San Fernando Hill

Standard

Sunday 18th September I visited San Fernando Hill, Trinidad. There are many words I can use to describe the scene which met me. However, none would do justice to the beauty and calm, sersfh11enity and peace felt as I found my way to the top of this hill.

Most times, when something plateaus it has reached its climax, for me it never does. Every time I think  okay I’ve seen it all before, it takes my breath away.

The birds can be heard as you ascend, and the windows must stay down to experience the difference in sound. The town is just a few minutes away, but this does not affect the beauty on this hill!

What could I forget…

I visited San Fernando Hill to share a picturesque view with the bloggers and readers who follow me on beBee and my blogs. Apart from the beach, where is my next go to place when I want to be inspired and share inspiration? This question answered itself. Thus after church on Sunday morning, I headed up this hill to show the world the view, streaming live.

It did not happen. I forgot to download the beBee app before getting there. Plan B, taking photos and recording a couple videos seemed my next options.

There is so much more to share…

The sun was out in full force, and my lenses got very dark. On all the sides the view was beautiful, and my greedy fingers got a lot of photos to share with you. There are many days I long for the beauty of what cannot be bought, it just takes a step outside.

Outside the boundaries

Social media challenges us to step outside of our boundaries. Bebee challenges us to get involved from the beginning. To experience the raw beauty of innovation and communication. To be bold and engage with different languages. To stream live videos which can tell the stories we wish to share to our audience. Moving forward can seem like starting over, or it can be a way of broadening horizons. Seeing differently, and enjoying the improvements!

Welcome to “Bee Social” Hive

Standard

To”beBee” or To beBee  that is the question?

Well friends, I’m sure by now you may have heard about a new social media platform called beBee. This social media site originates from Spain and has buzzed its way to the Top of my social media listing. In fact, when you like something a lot you want to see it grow. Like an adopted child I’ve embraced this website and its ‘affinity style’ of being social. The owners have made it their business to be around, and they are quite good at being present.

This beBee affinity social media network embraces its followers, and bloggers. To grow they’ve been letting the people who are using the site promote the site – and have appointed Ambassadors over the months from their international blogging community. Yes, we love this so much we are helping folks we have only met online grow this community – so this is international integration and affinity!

As the world continues to build international communities barriers are being crossed and languages learnt. Now you can practice your languages and learn about cultures and people by simply clicking – wonderful!

Groups are called ‘Hives’ and they can be specialized for almost any topic. My first ‘Hive’ is called ‘Bee Social’, and is intended to be the go to place to read almost anything, and to just be social. The description is below….

An Online Social Life.

As a social bee, I hope you will be social with me

Engage and share your posts

Flash Forward …Its Today!

To Give …

( This was written a few months ago. For whatever the reason, today I’m publishing, and hope you are inspired to live! )

We are here for more than one purpose. I firmly believe that Jesus Christ died for me, you and everyone. Some may believe the same, and some may not. I love you all.

What would l like my legacy to be, came crashing in almost two years ago. I felt that if I should die, I have not given enough, done enough, or loved enough. My thoughts were not on how much more money I need for bills, or the millions I wish I had in a bank account for my kids… no I simply wanted to have given more than I have.

That thought hurt. The thought that I may not be around to give was building within me as I wrote. I needed in some way to share my heart, for others who could see, could give others their heart, making hearts that much bigger. A way of being of service.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder can make death seem imminent.  If someone did not scream, and the car did not stop, I would be dead – but it stopped, and it will always stop, even in the flashbacks. Focus on the reality and the positives. There is a collage of feelings which I’ve been recovering from.  The one thing I appreciate about this is it makes me appreciate my life more.  You are quite unaware when you’re getting hit really hard remembering. It takes you back to that moment in time, when your life rushes to an end but it did not. Sympathy is not required – simply understanding.

If you have a strong positive hyper active personality like mine, this can shake your core if everything is pulled from you. Being forced to be slow is a challenge.  My biggest fight has been engaging my brain to think. To come out of the darkness long enough to recall the light. My love for people has surely helped me, and because I could not go out I gave here, with words. It also let me focus on something other than the pain my body felt constantly.

Flash-forward…

I am doing fine. My body is healing and I’m stronger. There are some things which I will not be able to do, but they won’t impact on my ability to live. Yes, I have much more than I thought, and I can work on different strengths. The physical body is amazing!

Understanding the triggers and how you can relive the past is a learning curve for anyone diagnosed with PTSD. Regaining some measure of control is good. You can calm your way out of the unexpected.  Being ready and thinking of the preparation which is there is a major source of comfort.

According to this Chinese Proverb, ‘The journey of a thousand miles starts with one step’. Wikipedia says it can be found in Chapter 64, Tao Te Ching, from Laozi.

One conscious movement, in the direction of forward makes all the difference. There are things you can control, and battles you can win. Let the one within be the beginning.

Start, go slowly, breathe in, breathe out and count… You are almost there!

From me to you…enjoy!

*** Special thanks to all my blogging friends on bebee, LinkedIn, WordPress, BlogSpot, Medium ***

Reflection

I’ve had my own share of challenges on this journey called life. Sometimes we get more, much more than we feel we can handle, but yet we press on. We do not have an option to give up on this beautiful today every morning when we open our eyes.

My right hand hurts with each key that I press as I type, but each day it gets easier. My eyes and my heart feel courage which at times waver when the uncertain casts its shadow. It is then I hear that  voice which reminds me of who I am, and who has made and formed me in his image and likeness. Then there is a peace and wonder, which challenges me to be all that I can be.

Last week I had the honor of being asked to be interviewed, and the gentleman, Michael Hillebrand lit a fire, and the words came out like a blaze ignited. The blogging community has been ‘my healing well’. It’s been a great place to rest and recover, heal and be revived. As each question was asked the desire to give and share more with this buzzing social media site was like an effervescent glass of water, fizzing out only at the end of each answer. It was published today, and I’d like to share it with you.

Bebee Interview by Michael Hillebrand with D-Wordslayer

Bebee is a social media site which I have been using since the beginning of this year and have been publishing there from around April. The camaraderie, warmth and energetic engagement reminds me of a party where everyone is happy and enthusiastic. While some of the topics are not all smiles as each day brings with it the world’s conflicts and pain, we do need a place of rest, and that can be found at http://www.bebee.com

This is a very personal invitation from me to you, my readers, followers, friends, and the world at large. Check us out at bebee.com and bebee me, because I want to bebee you with some good cheer and smiles!

Now when you click that link and you read, you will come to a video message. At the end of any rainbow is a pot of gold, if you dare to look for it. Come on, you know you want to….

By the way … I have a very funny rhyme as you bebee Me!

The bees are waiting to welcome you!

The Blogging Society

Standard

The Blogging Society

Today marks the first day in a collaboration between Laura Mikolaitis and myself. We have embarked on a connection between the USA and Trinidad, cold and hot weather with our personalities and pen as our armor. We met online, and our words have been speaking to each other. Laura M (as I will fondly call her) shares some comments which blow me away and send me into deep thought and emotion most times. She is daring, witty and a ‘marketing savant’, and great blog supporter.

Before I heard her voice, I knew she would sound as she did. She sounds all girly and strong with a bit of laughter in her tone. I’ve discovered over the past months we share a passion for ‘humanitarian advocacy’ in the workplace and have a shared compassion for taking care of those who need a voice. We now share our voices and perspectives on some questions on blogging!

Can blogging be considered ‘news’ or opinions?

Donna-Luisa:  Well initially I thought blogging was more about promotion and advertising for commercial purposes. This was propelled to the position of ‘news’ if it related to Google, Apple, USA politics ( haha), and anything which appeared to be of public interest – not simply commercial gain. That thinking got shot, as I started reading more and more on LinkedIn and Twitter. ‘Opinions’ came through more than information. Thus, I’m going to say – blogging is sharing your opinions on fact or fiction and has the power to influence. What are your thoughts Laura? Have I strayed too far from the question?

Laura: I don’t think that you have strayed too far at all Donna-Luisa. But I have to say that as a lead in question you really have my wheels turning.

When I look at where blogging started to where it is today, wow, what a metamorphosis it has undergone! Bloggers have been very adept at trekking along with the rise in social media – and now we find it integrated into our professional worlds too. In thinking about it, there’s a tremendous amount of thought leadership and perspective happening in blogs – opinions about news that brings newness to it.

Blogging is a gateway in my opinion – ah see I just connected the two – unintentionally of course! Think about the doors that have been opened and how it’s exposed us to a new age of media. As I see it, blogging spans the gamut from tips and tricks, to inspiration, to product reviews, and more. It takes branding and engagement to a new level. It’s no longer a haven for online journaling – well at least not in the way it was originally conceived. It seems for every corner of our lives, there is a blog to cover it.

We’ve definitely transformed the way we utilize blogging with one of those ways being a conduit to share, disseminate, and discuss news. But in the end, it still seems to me that the blogosphere remains rooted in ‘opinion’. Can that change, will it change? Time will tell.

Donna-Luisa:  Well I think it is news – just ‘news’ from your perspective based on the reader, and maybe some validation on their own thoughts.  By sharing your thoughts with information an invitation to discuss is sent out, thereby encouraging further discussion- in my opinion!

Do bloggers symbolize a culture and society of the writer?

Donna-Luisa:  On the surface many bloggers appear to be united by thoughts and words -a quasi-society type group. There are so many different nationalities, but we ‘trade’ in the English language with deviations based on cultural slang and sayings for illustrative purposes. The nationality does not factor initially unless the opinions expressed are radical / offensive in nature. As we discuss, and share comments the nationality can jump out, this does not appear to have any significant bearing on the post.  What do you think Laura?

Laura:  Interesting take on the question Donna-Luisa. My interpretation of it is slightly different. In today’s world, you can pretty much find a blog for any topic you are interested in. As I mentioned previously, blogging spans the gamut and it’s all at our fingertips – and it traverses the world.

Within the overall hierarchy of writing, I do think that bloggers symbolize a culture and society of the writer. Bloggers are a melting pot of voices, and as diverse as our voices are so are the topics that we write about. In my opinion, it is a transformative culture. Bloggers continue to enhance and change the way information is delivered – offering thought leadership, mentorship, and subject matter expertise on any number of things. Changing times combined with digital evolution has changed the course of blogging, and it has found a broader niche to reside in.

With technology at our fingertips, blogging can be done from virtually anywhere. How do you think this has affected the blogging stratosphere and where do you think it can go from here?

Donna-Luisa: Blogging seems to be a hobby or profession which can come alive anywhere. You just need access to the internet and your host platform. I think mobility with technology has given ‘blogs’ wings to fly. This also means you really need some knowledge of basic formatting, editing, design, social media and a reliable device.

I remember when I first started posting on pulse, it was cool, until one day pulse froze and I lost an article because I had to shut down and restart. Now I always write on a word document and copy to blog pages. WordPress and Blogger do have this challenge sometimes to a limited extent. Safer to use word! The blogging stratosphere will continue to transform how we share information and conduct business, ultimately holding its own influencer position. Many companies, such as Coca Cola, Starbucks, have already accessed the potential of blogs to build communities of customers. There is strength in advocacy for branding!

Laura:  I learned the hard way too Donna-Luisa. Pulse also froze on me, and I sweated it out. Eventually it resolved itself, but lesson learned! You bring up some good points about mobility with technology. I admit that on occasion I take technology for granted, and I shouldn’t. I can’t help but wonder how many voices remain dormant because of the digital divide? Granted some people choose not to walk hand in hand with technology, but there are people and places without adequate – or any – access to it. But that’s a whole other conversation. Nonetheless it does make my wheels turn again.

Pen and paper does seem like something of the past. Don’t get me wrong I still enjoy the tranquility of my journal, but the ease of use of our mobile devices makes it easier to capture our thoughts. It’s given us accessibility from virtually anywhere. And because of that, it has made it easier for people to enter the blogging world.

Seeing blogging infused into the corporate world, accompanied by video blogging, photo blogging, and its integration into news media certainly is a testament to its value. Let’s face it, people like to be heard and people love to share their opinions. Blogging has taken this formula and expanded it exponentially.

Going forward, it’s likely that blogging will become fully mobile as more and more people turn to the conveniences of their mobile devices. And I think it’s possible that we will see a shift in how blogging is perceived. As bloggers continue to share their voice in an effort to influence readers with regard to subject matters of various weight, this society of bloggers may morph yet again into a society of thought collaborators.

Building a brand is important; albeit personal or professional. Blogs are a way to enhance this marketing effort. What advice would you give to someone just starting out, particularly in this day and age where there are so many digital road maps to choose from?

Donna-Luisa: Blogging can be used to enhance your ‘footprint’ online. It’s like being able to say who you are – an extension of that CV or resume. Having a blog gives you a voice, one which can say a lot about who you are and your values, ability and capabilities. Some advice to share;

  1. Remember who you are and where you are.
  2. Your words tell a story which crafts an identity – be true to yourself and add some wisdom!
  3. Buy real estate. Your blog is your real estate, invest in yourself. You can acquire good land to build your property at no cost right now. You can find me on WordPress Blvd or BlogSpot Avenue. I have other properties but building seriously on these! My most current acquisition is bebee Heights, and this looks like an investment which will increase in value at a steady pace!
  4. Get to know social media by trying out the platforms. Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, LinkedIn, beBee, Medium, Pinterest, are all sources of traffic. Select your highways based on your target markets.
  5. Engagement, relationships, attitude matters!
  6. Respect the opinions of others, even if they seem far left from your own. Either decline to comment or get creative with a response. Don’t be mean, it’s not cool. Also remember, even if it feels good, do not bait a negative response, it can bite you!

Most important when you start blogging; read, and share your thoughts. I recall sharing my thoughts and perspectives for a long time before I started blogging. This helped in how I view my prospective readers, and made me very conscious of appreciation & acknowledgement. If it was not written and out there I would have nothing to read. Appreciate words and writers and comments from reader.

Laura:  Great advice, Donna-Luisa. It seems we have similar opinions on this. My advice (and mind you I’m still a novice at blogging) is this:

  1. Observe, engage, and communicate.
  2. Understand your voice and what you want to say. Remember that what you do does not define you – who you are defines you. Let that shine through.
  3. Take a chance, research and weigh your options, and don’t be afraid to ask for insight. Ultimately, choose the forums that suit you best and will meet your goals.
  4. Don’t get discouraged by the trolls. Remember people will always have something to say – and not everyone is going to agree with you. There are lovers and there are haters. How you react to them is within your control – how they react to you is not. Constructive banter can open doors, destructive banter closes them.
  5. Whatever your endeavors are remember that with each key stroke, picture and video you are leaving your digital footprint on this world. So make it a great one.

Based on our discussion it seems blogging is more than meets the eye, but less complicated than I first imagined. This is an era of social-influence and online communication. Texting, messaging and video-chatting are normal aspects of daily conversations. How we receive information is instantaneous, mobile, and visual. Emoji’s are frequently used referencing feelings and opinions emotively. The blogging society has influenced and shaped its own journalistic delivery. It is a time of opinions, and good or bad, positive or negative, someone reads what they are thinking, and will comment in interaction!

Special thanks to Laura Mikolaitis for agreeing to participate in this first blogging discussion!
