Understanding Blogging & Social Media

Standard

Marketing and consumer behavior

Its been a year and a half since I started blogging. When I began I was a battered and bruised warrior, on a mission to recover from an accident. Today, I’m still that warrior with a weakness in one area and stronger in others. Whatever makes us weak can be complimented by increased strength developed elsewhere.

If blogging was my day job I would fire me(smile), or I would give me several warning letters! Consistency has not been something I can be marked favorably on. Instead, healing has been my all-time job, and once I accepted the position, there are benefits for the gains I have been making. You must be fully committed to whatever you pursue if you are seeking excellence.

Benchmarking against the performance of theory and others, can severely weaken one’s ability to grow when it comes to healing. An excellent doctor once admonished me by saying, “Your body knows itself. It tells you when it needs help. How can you tell it, it does not, when it shows its distress through pain and inflammation?” Thus I eventually listened to my body, giving it time to recover. With blogging I decided to listen on several publishing platforms, to understand what drives readers and followers to choose one over another.

Readers, followers, bloggers

8af7a-animal-2067456__340

Blogging is much more than sharing stories via words posted online. “One must be keen to listen to be good at blogging, because its about a conversation.” This is my understanding of blogging from my experience. Businesses have been reaching out to have this conversation. Bloggers tell a story with their reading/viewing customers, which can help influence the decision-making process. In fact, social media influencing has become a major marketing strategy across most commercial industries. Competitive advantage is gained or lost through reviews of ‘rants and raves’ ( Trip advisor ,Amazon, and others) on the customer experience — experienced!

People blog because they believe they have something they wish to share with the world. For this sharing to be effective, an audience that is willing to read and respond is necessary. Responding can take the form of ‘liking’ and that can be compared to someone listening to a singer and clapping to show their appreciation. When the audience starts singing along with the singer, its the beginning of ‘engagement’ and a beautiful conversation. The standing ovation can be associated with the sharing and commenting on the blog which stirs emotion.

Marketing and the Blogger

In marketing we learn that different markets require different strategies. Our target market will be made up of several types of consumers, and the ones we focus on will be those we believe we can convert to buyers. If our research is contaminated by bias, or misinformation, then, when the product is offered the results will dispute the research. Personal blogging can be like that.

Some bloggers will start without a clear plan. As they develop confidence in their skill, they may be guided by the topics which stimulate discussion and sharing from followers. Many times , bloggers do not see their readers and followers as consumers, and are disheartened by the results after publishing. Bloggers should have a basic marketing strategy to ‘get the ball rolling’ based on their objectives and goals.

Blogging and social media communication, requires some general understanding of marketing and consumer behavior to be effective. You don’t need to be qualified to listen , you simply need to be ‘open’ to listening. Blogs are important as stated in ‘Principles of Marketing, Kotler & Armstrong. 2006,p561. Pearson, 11th Edition’, “Blogs have voice and personality. They’re human. They come to us not from some media-genic, anchor-bot on an air-conditioned sound stage, but from an individual.” This is one of the reasons why we experience strong emotions, when bloggers use their pen, sharing their truest opinions and beliefs. When a reader takes the time to respond passionately whether in agreement or disagreement, the blogger has been effective.

In his latest article on Inc. ‘Here’s how to properly align your sales and marketing teams in 2017′, John White states, “ Social media has caused a blur in activities that are now both sales and marketing related…” As bloggers we should align our blogs (sales product) with marketing to increase our readership. When I started to think of blogging as a product I’m selling to my readers, the way I write and share took on a different meaning. My followers create a market for the words I’m ready to share!

I have found this blogging journey to be quite fascinating as I take apart the traditional thoughts and theories on marketing and consumer behavior. Social media is a dynamic communication tool, which requires ongoing participation and interaction, for the analytics to make sense!

Have I stirred a flame with embers glowing — please share your thoughts via comments. Thanks for being awesome!

The Social Media Follower: Following Communication

Standard

a6438-followers2b2It was surprising to me that I love using social media. Social media is communication. Its about technology and integrating it with your message, to transmit feelings and points in a manner which can be as interactive as the tools used. That’s my definition.

Merriam Webster says it this way, “ Social Media are forms of communication (as websites for social networking and microblogging)through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages and other content as videos.”

I never thought I would ‘get it’ so quickly (many years), because I was actually concerned about privacy, security of websites and the destructive capabilities of the unknown. Awareness of safety measures made it easier to jump in and enjoy the experience.

There are somethings we forget about humans when we are caught up in the latest technology blitz or hype. Not many people like to ask questions. They don’t like asking for several reasons which include the fear of sounding ignorant, dumb or stupid. Communication tools and social media channels are things which demand questions to be asked, because they change so frequently. Here are some examples of the words which ‘tripped me up’, before I asked questions and investigated their meanings;

  1. Algorithm — This sounded like math or algebra, and I was convinced it would be hard to understand because I’m awful at math!

According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary its, “a step by step procedure for solving a problem or accomplishing some end, especially by a computer.” Thus, its like baking a cake and knowing what proportions are needed so it won’t flop! If my teachers taught math as food I’d be a grade A student.

2. SEO — This one took a while for me to figure out, but my first impression was it had to be a verb in whatever content you wrote online. (LOL)

Webopedia states, “SEO is short for search engine optimization. SEO is a methodology of strategies techniques and tactics, used to increase the number of visitors to a website by obtaining a high-ranking placement in the search results page of a search engine.” eg. Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc. Let me say it this way – if you want someone to find your location you would give directions, sometimes referring to a map or drawing a sketch of the area. SEO is the map/sketch with general directions. As you get more specific with the details, its easier for someone to find you. That’s why SEO is important. It makes information easier to be found when searching online.

3. Followers — This one should have been as easy as the generally understood meaning, which was what I assumed it to be. It is not.

Merriam-Webster states, “ one in the service of another. Fan, devotee.” Social media followers are different from followers whom you lead, and are doing as requested or observed. No way. Social media followers are thinkers who use access to you and your network to expand their own. For many its a one-way relationship without reciprocity. Ideally, it should be a two-way flow of support and sharing.

Having 10K or 100K followers will not guarantee you supporters. You have to build a relationship. This is like having a customer who follows the activities of your company because you sell the Toyota brand of vehicle, and they like cars. Many followers may check out your cars but its the one who engages with you , who may become a customer or refer you to others in his network. Increased engagement, will grow the value to each other in the relationship.

4. Bots — got this one right because I thought it had to be something with robotic features. Bots help with automation which is a process of sharing information and giving feedback , through the use of software, designed to help improve service virtually. I’ve seen them in action and though I’m not keen on talking/writing to anything which is not human, they do generate responses which are quite relatable. Siri, Cortana, Alexa, and any other bot are all here to stay, so we might as well make them welcome into our world!

Experience it

Social media makes it possible for strangers from worldwide locations to meet virtually, through various channels with speed and efficiency. Its easy to have face to face communication with folks because there are so many options, and they are constantly being upgraded. Building quality relationships are easier through the use of ‘real-time’ interaction via Facebook, WhatsApp, Skype, Twitter, Snap Chat, and a host of other computer and mobile apps.

Your followers can eventually become your close friends / business associates. Gamers interact and share as they engage in their online sport with those they follow and others. Even with all this access, the traditional emotional barriers ( human qualities) are there to be overcome. Trust still has to be established with followers and the site where you meet, for the relationships to mature into more than a collection of addresses.

Am I a social media follower?

Yes I am. I’m following many folks I will probably never physically touch, but the potential for a planned meet-up is also possible. Through blogging and sharing my words you will learn about me and my interests. I’m inspired daily by the writings of many of my followers. Our humanness and diversity keeps us engaged socially online. Maybe one day we will meet. Until then, I’ll see you when I power up on my blogs, medium, twitter, beBee, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Goggle+, tumblr, and others.

Does my experience mirror your understanding? Maybe I’m wrong, what do you think?

If this resonates with you, let me know.  Please share your thoughts via comments. Thanks for being awesome!

blog 2Readers, followers, bloggers.

When the audience starts singing along with the singer, its the beginning of ‘engagement’ and a beautiful conversation. The standing ovation can be associated with the sharing and commenting on the blog which stirs emotion.

Now there are times when an audience may not like the words presented. This has been an interesting observation I’ve been a part of on different sites. If the words are the opinion of the author its personal. Let’s face it, political and social views are a haven for controversial discussion and debate. Initially, it was hard to read and discuss the views of others who were of a different mindset. Though I thought I could be unbiased — my cultural, ethical, moral, religious, political and a host of other beliefs called out emotional actions and reactions!

“We tend to cling and be drawn to the things we like, or feelings we control, and shun the ones which unsettle and disrupt.”

Disruption creates chaos which can either lead to greater understanding or a ‘war of words and hurt feelings.’ I’ve experienced both and I’d like to say ‘maturity’ comes from understanding the things which ‘ruffle our feathers’ while allowing our feelings to settle and be less judgmental about the other person’s opinion. Disruption is also the one sure way we can move from our ‘limited vision’ while seeing what impacts on the perception, and views of others.

For 2017, I made a decision to try to streamline my online musings and content into different categories. Business and career categories will overlap when it comes to my blog platform, because life is not one dimensional.

There are many personal reflections on a wide range of topics which will only be published here though shared sometimes on other sites from time to time. We will see how this works and will review as we move forward.

A Tale of Two Women – Hillary & Kim

Standard

Prelude…

I was eighteen when I had my first son. I did not know what it felt like to love someone unconditionally until I met him as he grew in my womb. He was born on November, 22nd 1987, the most beautiful baby boy the earth had ever seen.

I had a toothache and it was after ten at night. There were no pharmacies open in those days, so my boyfriend decided to take us to his family home for medication. The house was quiet when we arrived, and it was after 12am. I went immediately to the bathroom for medication leaving my son and his dad on the sofa, their backs were facing the sliding doors which I heard close, as I hurried to get some toothx lotion. As I made my way after a few minutes to the front, I saw someone with a kerchief covering half of a face, and movement outside the door. Before I could respond, thinking maybe his brother was playing a joke, three men stormed in. The look on my face caused by boyfriend to hold onto our son and all the air and time stood still. I remember thinking, pay attention, don’t panic, do as they say, don’t panic, pray, note everything, do not scream. It took one second – everything flashes in and out of one’s mind. Will we die, will I be raped, will my baby or boyfriend be hurt, I must save them. The first man came towards me quickly, and I saw the gun for a moment, before he placed it against my lower back nudging me to listen, and do as he said. “keep quiet, where is the money, do not speak, tell me where is the money?” I did not know what he was speaking about, and before I could respond, he advised me not to speak. He walked me through the house never moving the gun from its position on the lower portion of my back. They were pulling open drawers and moving things around. All this time, the gun remained waiting to be used. The barrel was probably no bigger than a couple inches in diameter, and I knew it was hard, heavy and alive. The second guy had placed a long shiny blade at the back of my boyfriend’s neck, and told him not to move or he would kill our baby. The third had another knife and kept saying, “let’s just cut them…”.

After what seemed like an eternity of walking throughout the house with the robber as he searched with one of his accomplices, they made me knock on two of the bedroom doors where my boyfriend’s brother and sister were asleep. I was left in his sister’s bedroom with her, and then the two brothers and my son were brought into the room. The guy with the gun said to my boyfriend, ” see we have not hurt your women.” They locked the door and told us not to try to get out or we would be killed. I cleared out one of the cupboard shelves, and rocked my son to sleep, then placed him hidden for safety, without blocking the air. We prayed aloud. They returned soon after, and left again after looking at us. We continued praying. That night they got just over one thousand dollars in cash and some jewelry. I am glad they got something, or it may have ended differently.

I’m sharing this experience, because I know what it feels like to be confronted by bandits. I know what it feels like for the police to come and rescue us, after we got an old telephone below the bed to work- no mobile phones in those days. I know what it is to feel paralyzed with fear every time a door opens. I know how many years it takes sleeping with the lights on and constantly locking doors, checking windows and needing to know my children are okay. I saw the resemblance on the faces of strangers, and could feel the gun barrel for over a decade. This is not a fairy-tale.

The dark side of social media – Kim Kardashian West

Life on social media reflects the society we live in. There are highs and lows, good and bad, and then there is the callousness of humankind when shit happens. Everyone shares a lot, sometimes way too much. This is the culture developed, by the incessant desire of living within the reality of others.

The dark side of social media attracts a lot of attention. In fact many make a living off perpetuating violations and lifting the bar over things and situations which are socially, psychologically and morally harmful to others. Sometimes it’s for a ‘harmless laugh” and at other times the reasons can be warped and sinister. This should not excuse criminal behavior, but we have to be aware of the impact of social media on our safety.

Trending in the news is the robbery of Kim Kardashian-West. My heart goes out to her. She is a mother, daughter, sister, wife, friend and a human being. I’m not into reality shows but from time to time I see her sharing her life. This lady is resilient, and she has the boldface bravery to stare a lot of negative things in the face, and turn them around to her benefit. For the most part she lives a life of drama and perseverance. She is no different to the wolves on Wall Street or politicians who decide to pursue dreams and possibilities. She is ambitious, innovative, and declares herself selfish, and open to scrutiny. She is a public figure. I am not a fan but know a lot of people who are, including my nieces. While many choose to see the negative impact of the Kardashians ascent into this world, let’s be objective and admit, they are successful because they are good at creating something, many dream of and live vicariously through. Many women would like to have some of their opportunities… including the things frowned on. Whatever your personal thoughts, the Kardashians make the role of family support in today’s society relevant. Whatever the crazy scandal or situation, they own it, and break it down into digestible pieces, thus creating a media maelstrom. Social media is their domain.

Kim was robbed at gun point. She was tied up gaged and endured a ‘lifetime of moments’ uncertain if she would be raped or killed. As the news made all the social media sites, and the comments, and twitter storm took over, I thought about this woman. I felt close to her, because I understand, and do not wish this experience on anyone. Her wealth does not make her immune or set apart from humanity when she is a victim of a crime. What has she ever done to hurt you, the person tuning into the channels to watch her life or checking out her twitter feed, or reading all the gossip about her. That some would wish for her to be harmed is a painful read, and gut wrenching, the way it was initially assumed to be a publicity stunt. The price of this reality aspect of a Hollywood job, shows its dark side of inhumanity.

Hillary Rodham-Clinton

Hillary Rodham-Clinton is another lady who has had the boldface bravery to be ambitious. She has worked hard towards her dreams, fight for her friendship and marriage, and have the audacity at the peak of her career to run for president of the United States of America on two occasions. To top it all off she has drive, determination, character, stamina, and love for the people of her country, to stand in firing line and take all those darn bullets of words like a man. She is no coward, but she is a mother, wife, friend, grandmother and a human being. She has a warm and loving light which shows, because she cares for people. Like many US presidents and leaders before her, she has made mistakes and is not perfect. It seems that because of her gender, and tenacity to keep going, she is judged more harshly than the men who went before her.As a woman who dares to stand up in a world carved out for men, she is perhaps, an outcast because she can do this job of President and has proven time and time again, that she will make the hard decisions… whatever the outcome on her. She is prepared for a moment such as this.

Hillary has spent most of her life in public office and has the scars and the experience of a veteran of politics. I have watched, read and followed her career throughout the years, and though, I do not agree with her many times, she consistently gets up and fights. Never giving up, and always with dignity, grace and good character.

A Tale of  Women

Traditional ideas, societal norms and customs are twisted when it comes to women and ambition. If we decide to be housewives and homemakers there are those who will ridicule and condemn us as having no ambition, skill or progressive modern behavior. If we choose to pursue dreams, we can find ourselves the target of feminist jokes and sexist antagonism. If we should prove ourselves capable of being a leader in the government, military, civil society, religious group, our lives and character are targeted by those of lesser self-esteem.

There is ‘political power’ and ‘social business power’ which can be commanded by any gender to come forth to attain. As I read an article by Richard Cohen, Washington Post, July 25, 2016, ‘If Hillary Clinton were a man’, I wonder would people view her the same way. The prejudices of this US election, makes it more apparent that society has challenges with women in powerful roles, and attaining personal goals, or even being ambitious.

There are many male business moguls, rappers, singers, and public figures on social media and prior in print media, who are celebrated. They rise above  sex scandals and other activities to become celebrated business icons and public figures. For Kim Kardashian- West, maybe its time we look at how she has developed an empire and business career all her own. How Kim and her family started their business and careers are different from what is considered traditionally acceptable. Many are shocked by the very public expose of their very personal and private selves, and they are labelled. Hugh Hefner was never labelled the same way, and he was not showcasing himself, but many ‘vulnerable others’.

I do not personally know these women, nor do have any association which would bring us into contact. Like the rest of the world looking on, their headlines drew me in, and with a different lens, compassion, respect, and deep understanding, I see this part of their journey. I do wish their was a lot less prejudice and a greater willingness to embrace the brave and bold warrior spirits of these very different women. Their impact on global society is defining. When you come across them, you will feel something. Love or hate, they epitomize resilience and perseverance in today’s society. Women are more than able.

These are my thoughts and observations, which, may differ from others. Different is good sometimes, its all about perspectives! Thank you for reading, commenting and sharing if you are moved to do so.

A Fired-Up Bee…

Standard

Some help from William Shakespeare

Friends, Bloggers, Social Media Citizens…lend me your ears. I write to share my experiences and perspectives not to praise beBee. There are many social media sites on the internet. The good is often shared with others via blogs, so let it be with clicking on, and experiencing  beBee.

There may be a few bloggers who have different experiences from my own, but each one can choose to receive that which they wish for. From my own engagement I have found it to be the best social media experience thus far in my blogging journey. My words come from my heart and head, and they are written to be shared. Every site will share your words, but some  will use selective algorithms and systems based on their philosophy. BeBee’s philosophy is about ‘affinity’ and this is a core aspect of their platform thus sharing is not restricted to your network.

As a relatively new platform the company is building a culture in-keeping with its philosophy of inclusion, based on its actions. Yes, generally everything which is new needs to be tested, used , tweaked and adjusted, and beBee is doing that. Engagement requires more than one willing party, so from the beginning something was needed to build a new and engaging team of supporters.

The Ambassador program was established early on, for those who wish and desire to be bricklayers, and foundation builders. These Ambassadors have a core belief based on their history of engagement and interaction, and this in my opinion is ‘positive affinity’. These ambassadors and those who will be added are part of the ‘building team’ because they believe in ‘positive affinity’.

Engagement  can be positive and not be in-agreement, this is an art which ‘social media aficionados’ practice online and in their non virtual lives. Engagement can be passionate and fiery without being nasty and disrespectful. Engagement can be expressive and powerful, yet kind in delivery of the written word. Arguments and disagreements are the hallmark of diverse opinions and immense learning and fun!  Yes, my friends we will be proved by our words and willingness to fight fair, so no one feels the need to ‘block out’ those whose aim wound, with or without intent.

Indeed, with the introduction of video streaming beBee can once more distinguish itself as a trendsetter and not simply a platform geared to fulfilling its own needs without understanding the needs of its users. If you have seen the video streams you may find that sense of affinity shining through. Why should one’s professional life be a façade separate and apart from one’s social persona; a coin has two sides both different and unified into one – So too beBee and I am sure ‘others’ will follow because it makes sense.

But I am here to share my experiences and perspectives, and my poetic self, does resolve to say;

When I am asked, where would you  recommend someone to start their social media experience – the answer is beBee

Why don’t you choose a site and build a platform and place all your energies in one location, the answer is –beBee shares with everyone, and so I’ll follow their lead. They have proven their interest in sharing my words on their platform and on others.

Why don’t you just go with one of the other platforms that know their stuff, the answer is, what matters in not who exists right now but who is intent on growing and being around for my words to be shared – that’s beBee. A thought occurred to me one day recently, ‘why buy what is established as good by others when something better is being innovated which fits me.’

Why beBee, my answer is , why not beBee? Those who were here before have played innovator and forgotten how they began and why they wanted to grow. I feel creative when logging into beBee. I don’t expect perfection like that of something old, but an improved creation of what is new, with a desire for continuous evolution. I want to be social, and engaged. I want to meet others who are like minded and those who are different. I want to learn about new cultures and another language. I want to be a part of the biggest change in how we use social media to build relationships, brands, and awareness.

So yes, I am cheerful, I am happy tagging my followers, encouraging and highlighting beBee. There are naysayers who may have different perspectives, and that’s the way of the world. My heart is filled with appreciation for these humble Spaniards who have dared to take on the ‘rest of the world.’ Their social media philosophy, I heartily embrace. The Ambassador engaging support team, I am privileged to be a part of. I have accepted the baton, with a blindfold but in trust, because of my experiences. BeBee is growing… welcome and be a part of this site with me.

*** For those Shakespeare lovers, the speech by Marc Anthony in Julius Caesar is by far one of the most powerful and moving speeches written from the works of William Shakespeare. I remember each line, from that 3rd act scene 2, as I sat thinking about beBee, the ambassadors, bloggers, followers. I hope the essence of that speech resonates through my own. Those who have eyes to see and a passion to read, share and engage my words, I thank you very much!
