The Social Media Follower: Following Communication

Standard

a6438-followers2b2It was surprising to me that I love using social media. Social media is communication. Its about technology and integrating it with your message, to transmit feelings and points in a manner which can be as interactive as the tools used. That’s my definition.

Merriam Webster says it this way, “ Social Media are forms of communication (as websites for social networking and microblogging)through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages and other content as videos.”

I never thought I would ‘get it’ so quickly (many years), because I was actually concerned about privacy, security of websites and the destructive capabilities of the unknown. Awareness of safety measures made it easier to jump in and enjoy the experience.

There are somethings we forget about humans when we are caught up in the latest technology blitz or hype. Not many people like to ask questions. They don’t like asking for several reasons which include the fear of sounding ignorant, dumb or stupid. Communication tools and social media channels are things which demand questions to be asked, because they change so frequently. Here are some examples of the words which ‘tripped me up’, before I asked questions and investigated their meanings;

  1. Algorithm — This sounded like math or algebra, and I was convinced it would be hard to understand because I’m awful at math!

According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary its, “a step by step procedure for solving a problem or accomplishing some end, especially by a computer.” Thus, its like baking a cake and knowing what proportions are needed so it won’t flop! If my teachers taught math as food I’d be a grade A student.

2. SEO — This one took a while for me to figure out, but my first impression was it had to be a verb in whatever content you wrote online. (LOL)

Webopedia states, “SEO is short for search engine optimization. SEO is a methodology of strategies techniques and tactics, used to increase the number of visitors to a website by obtaining a high-ranking placement in the search results page of a search engine.” eg. Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc. Let me say it this way – if you want someone to find your location you would give directions, sometimes referring to a map or drawing a sketch of the area. SEO is the map/sketch with general directions. As you get more specific with the details, its easier for someone to find you. That’s why SEO is important. It makes information easier to be found when searching online.

3. Followers — This one should have been as easy as the generally understood meaning, which was what I assumed it to be. It is not.

Merriam-Webster states, “ one in the service of another. Fan, devotee.” Social media followers are different from followers whom you lead, and are doing as requested or observed. No way. Social media followers are thinkers who use access to you and your network to expand their own. For many its a one-way relationship without reciprocity. Ideally, it should be a two-way flow of support and sharing.

Having 10K or 100K followers will not guarantee you supporters. You have to build a relationship. This is like having a customer who follows the activities of your company because you sell the Toyota brand of vehicle, and they like cars. Many followers may check out your cars but its the one who engages with you , who may become a customer or refer you to others in his network. Increased engagement, will grow the value to each other in the relationship.

4. Bots — got this one right because I thought it had to be something with robotic features. Bots help with automation which is a process of sharing information and giving feedback , through the use of software, designed to help improve service virtually. I’ve seen them in action and though I’m not keen on talking/writing to anything which is not human, they do generate responses which are quite relatable. Siri, Cortana, Alexa, and any other bot are all here to stay, so we might as well make them welcome into our world!

Experience it

Social media makes it possible for strangers from worldwide locations to meet virtually, through various channels with speed and efficiency. Its easy to have face to face communication with folks because there are so many options, and they are constantly being upgraded. Building quality relationships are easier through the use of ‘real-time’ interaction via Facebook, WhatsApp, Skype, Twitter, Snap Chat, and a host of other computer and mobile apps.

Your followers can eventually become your close friends / business associates. Gamers interact and share as they engage in their online sport with those they follow and others. Even with all this access, the traditional emotional barriers ( human qualities) are there to be overcome. Trust still has to be established with followers and the site where you meet, for the relationships to mature into more than a collection of addresses.

Am I a social media follower?

Yes I am. I’m following many folks I will probably never physically touch, but the potential for a planned meet-up is also possible. Through blogging and sharing my words you will learn about me and my interests. I’m inspired daily by the writings of many of my followers. Our humanness and diversity keeps us engaged socially online. Maybe one day we will meet. Until then, I’ll see you when I power up on my blogs, medium, twitter, beBee, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Goggle+, tumblr, and others.

Does my experience mirror your understanding? Maybe I’m wrong, what do you think?

If this resonates with you, let me know.  Please share your thoughts via comments. Thanks for being awesome!

Just Thinking out loud – Control

Standard

Random Thoughts

Blogging has been for me, a way to share as much as I know with the rest of the world. These are my thoughts and examples from my own experiences, so I guess you can say – Dwordslayer shares a real person!

There are days I need encouragement to read, and then there are moments when comforting, interaction exchanges matter. Right now, at this very moment, my ‘happy’ wants to jump out, but its being held by somethings I can’t fully control. Today, I’d like to talk about the things which I can’t control and how blogging has helped me get to this point of healing a broken body.

Musical mind

There is a song for every feeling. Every mood and nuance of life has rhythm. Just imagine how you feel when you’re excited and listen to the matching sound which fills you at the thought. I can feel a dose of Salsa filling me with excitement, and immediately it reflects my feelings. (Conga – Gloria Estefan)

Now imagine, fear, sadness and pain. For me there are so many love songs about a ‘love gone wrong’, its like a selection fiesta, but the melody I choose, will make me feel at peace. I have practiced feeling( the beats/rhythm) songs of peace for emotions which can make me unhappy or feel fear. We are drawn to it because of our moods, and the desire for a companion in emotions. ( In the Arms of an Angel – Sarah McLachlan)

Lets now look at the pressure of challenges. I need a song to motivate and I’ve got a ‘cloud of  encouragement’ filled with gospel and relatable inspirational songs collected over the years. Have you ever listened to “The Climb” by Miley Cyrus, if not please check it out.

Then of course there are my happy songs, full of energy and though some are not super upbeat , they can take me to a place of fulfillment like no other. I spend a lot of time in this zone, because its my choice.( Party Rock Anthem-LMFAO)

Its out of my control

I can’t control the weather. It will rain like an ocean overflowing when I least expect it. The sun will be blisteringly hot, and I will be wishing for rain. Then when its humid I will be wishing for a less sticky atmosphere and be hoping a breezy wind will stop by. Whatever happens with the weather, I don’t get to decide how the day will be. I get to prepare for it sometimes, and I get to experience it. I can choose to gripe, or enjoy the benefits of each weather. In the Caribbean I wish for snow, because its , in my opinion, the hugging weather!

Everyone has a different opinion of me, and some thoughts may make me run for cover if uncovered! In the USA election which just ended, I was really hoping the other candidate won. Neither candidate was loved by everyone. Everyone was influenced by information which tipped a scale based of their needs and personal convictions. Its gotten crazy, but if the tables are turned someone will be unhappy. Thus, political outcomes, I cannot control, but voting gives a contributing stake in the outcome if I were a citizen. This is life, and a democracy at work. I hope more persons can be mobilized, for a different outcome the next time it comes around. We cannot control the thoughts of others but can influence, and that’s much better than being around ‘remote control humans’.

I can’t control an accident, or the effects of it. I can control the process of healing and while the outcomes may not meet my expectations, I can mange my expectations to be fair to myself. Some of you may relate to this. It is one of those ‘out of control ‘ things which can make one feel frustrated, anxious, and even angry with oneself and others. Yes, its easy to say it will get better, and even live the words, of hope. My truth is not textbook. My truth is a bunch of DNA’s mixed with age and some other stuff, which make me unique. We all are unique. I could not stop the accident, but I can take control of my outcome, and you can also.

Its in my control

I can smile, laugh, feel happy, cry, and be the best woman in some crazy situations which makes me happy. Blogging and wearing my heart on my sleeve has been one of the best remedies, in my opinion. I’m sharpening my skills and sharing to the world, and getting to rest at the same time. Social media, has given me the control confidence with technology needed to expand the horizons of delivery of my capabilities. Maybe, somethings are out of our control, but every one of us was born with the capacity to have ‘self’ under control of ‘self’.

This is just the beginning. Face the fear, and face the future. You are your own super- control freak. Its your God given ability, and moment of truth.

You Made A Way – Travis Greene

I did start writing this early last week, so its being published a bit late, or maybe its perfectly timed for you – my friend, my family, my online world of bees and social media kin!

I’m sending a huge shout out to the Bebee community of  Ambassador Bees, Blogger Bees and everyone who has missed me, and sent me a note. I sure miss You & Me. It’s an experience of emotions and passions which results in a Social Media Experience.

Let’s Talk: Carnival-Evolution or Revolution

Standard

Carnival Mas….

Carnival in Trinidad&Tobago is different now from when I was growing up. I have been around during the evolution and revolution of our culture, our mas. Evolution is about change. A revolution is the taking over of something which exists, making it different.

Getting ready to ‘play mas’ for J’ouvert starts on Carnival Sunday night, most times after a party. Arriving at the meeting point for 2:00am Monday morning and partying in the streets. The costumes for this event are covered in paint, mud or signs describing our local political or social controversies.

As the band, comprising ten to one thousand or more persons parade the streets, the steel-bands and DJ’s play music to ‘chip or trot/jump’ dance.

The Monday road party changes around noon as masqueraders return home and change into a part of their costume for Tuesday masquerade! The party continues until very late, sometimes stopping after 10pm.

Tuesday comes and the city comes alive. Everyone makes their way to a major city, for the road parade. Port of Spain is the main city, and its where over fifty thousand revelers adorned in full costume are ready. They all want to pass the ‘big’ stage in the Queens Park Savannah. The dance starts and goes non stop until midnight. This is how we party. This is how Trinidadians have fun. The spectators line the streets and mingle within the masquerade bands. Everyone dances, even children.

There are many discussions about whether we have gotten better and improved our carnival. The older folks think maybe we have lost ‘our’ perspective on what makes ‘real mas’. Others, the younger folks believe its a great revolution of creativity. I have played mas many times. The masquerade is an experience which one should know to understand how it affects our society. I love costumes, and becoming a different character to dance and party on the road – our streets, our stage.

A couple years ago I discovered a picture of me playing mas when I was 20 years old and at the time my costume was considered risque. As my kids looked at the picture they said, “mom that’s a lot of costume!” I laughed, I recalled the costumes now, many are beads, feathers and adornments for swimming suits, with a headpiece. My son, chuckled and advised some women have started using pasties and body paint. In fact, I did see this a couple days later in our daily newspaper.

The YouTube video above is the best illustration of what will be seen for carnival 2016 ongoing as I write.

Machel Montano has been making music from a very early age. He has won, the Soca King of the world many times. His music, is quite similar to zouk – a French Antilles  tempo. It invokes rhythmic sensuality and Machel Montano never misses a beat! His lyrics are mostly about revelry, culture and freedom of happiness and enjoyment!

I would love to see more costumes and less swimsuits.. simply because it is exciting to capture the story. It’s also good to be in character, as acting the dance creates something for the imagination to dream about. The creativity and the designers have this challenge. Give the people what they prefer (nudity) or tell the story and maybe the economics will be affected. Innovation is good, mas is good, storytelling is our culture!

Trinidad&Tobago a destination for carnival!

Let’s Talk: It’s Carnival – Trinidad&Tobago Style!

Standard

Carnival…

There is no other carnival anywhere in the world like Trinidad&Tobago! Its about a total release of  music, rhythms, masquerading, showmanship, freedom of expression and culture!

Just that word in passing can conjure up dancing in the streets. The total abandonment of social conformity takes over as men, women and children dance to the sounds of the steel-pan and soca artists & calysonians!

Ahhh, there is that music… this how it feels!

Masqueraders are in costumes which are gaily colored. Some are fully clothed but many are two piece swimsuits with glitter, feathers and beads adorning the bodies of the actors..’all players of the mas’. I have been there and the feeling is exhilarating, unlike any you will ever feel unless you are in Trinidad for Carnival. Anyone can ‘play mas’, by registering with a ‘band’ and approximately nine hundred USD!

Music flows at the highest frequency. The beat moves and everyone synchronizes movement. It is an inbuilt sensory of a vibe, a feeling. Our soca artists can stir crowds with a single beat and song. Social commentary takes over when Calypsonians both old and young express and incite revelry !

The season starts at the beginning of the calendar new year, but preparation starts from a few months after each carnival season. On the Saturday before Carnival Monday and Tuesday – always two days before Ash Wednesday- children take over the streets, masquerading in costumes. Our junior steel-bands are there together with the music DJs all lining the streets of Port of Spain and other cities nationwide .

It begins.. it is here! Our culture, our Carnival – Trinidad & Tobago! Join me for a cultural fiesta of sharing over the next few days.

Share your feedback and any topics you’d like to have covered. Let’s talk Trinidad & Tobago carnival!

Blogging and that’s my Jazz!

Standard

Get Ready…

2016 – is a year I take chances and challenge myself to do something different.I need to! My present has changed – life happens and the choices are “Live, live, live.” So here I am jumping into something with uncertainty.
A few months ago I started blogging on LinkedIn and it has helped me to find solace and a place of peace in my words. I read and commented, engaged and enjoyed sharing with many wonderful people from different places all around the world. Now I understand its a whole new world my eyes and mind had never seen. It has life and can breathe. Social media and social communities are an evolution in technology and has been here for some time. I just caught the train via LinkedIn rail and my journey has fully started. No more standing in line!

Get Set…

Taking a step to share what I normally would to a sales team in person via a blog takes a lot of planning. The first week of two minute daily posts, are done and the images to bring them to life are happening as I type.  Referring to my messages and the reminder to make it mobile ready from Jim Murray looks back at me. It’s back to the visual test on my mobile and there are some positioning issues to clean up. Finally its done and I’m happy.
You can take what you want from all experiences. We have a wealth of knowledge literally at our fingertips and I am very thankful for all the support and encouragement which got me going.

Writing my thoughts, feelings and life experiences are one thing. Sharing what I consider my ‘practical business smarts’ is another. The career and work experiences are different. They are practical and easy, because I like to break everything down when I’m learning.

My two passions are now on display for the world to receive, reject or be indifferent to. I’m passionate about people and find great joy in personal development and growth of others. I’m also passionate about business and making money. Can both passions find a way in words- I will soon find out!

Am I vulnerable -sure I am.
Am I unsure -you bet your socks I am! I have nothing to lose, and my gut says someone will need my words to help them daily with their work & life.

Imagine, I can be the sales/ operations/ marketing manager you always wanted to get your team revved up and my words are right there at your finger tips.

Why two minutes you may wonder – that’s the attention span I need committed daily during the early morning cuppa! The longer posts will be once or twice a month based on feedback.

Go…

I have 2 blogs – Dwordslayer  with Blogger and donnaluisawordslayer with WordPress. During the past two months I’ve been testing and learning about both platforms.
With Blogger you had a taste of my “Christmas Nostalgia”.
I’m living this year and  will share my passions. My challenges are still there, but my fire is renewed and its ready to burn!
The first bit of advice from “Lets Talk”  is called “#Get Off Your Hashtag”
Thank you for your feedback and engagement!
