Humanitarian Advocacy 3 – The Real Cost of War & Justice (Part 1)

Find The Light

“In the moment of your hardest trials the sun will come out. In some way it will.”(Eversley,2015)

Everything in life has some light in the darkest of times. How do you value life and the cost of justice in a corporate war? Why start a war and what is justice – are the questions to answer.

Life’s Cost

There is a cost to live, a life to pay for

Do know your worth
The value of your life
If you can figure it out, give me your tally
Hard to decide, if attributing money
Can you value a part, maybe the fingers you write with?
Do you think it’s worth more than words of a myth?
No one part can be valued more than the other
No one is more important than that unknown brother?
So you live but you die; life of working shame
For money, or power to add to a name
Life misses its mark as you tarry and jest
Love misses your soul, do you even feel regret
Lashing out their voices in rage with threats of a war which is real
Your dagger digging into that innocent’s appeal
Hear, hair as my locks fall to the ground
Samson weakens with your rage
Life has darkened and aged
Justice has a cost, war has one too
Life has a cost, paid for with rules
The system of freedom frees you from outside
The bondage of hatred, keeps you as you slide
You pay with your soul, to suffer the cost
Some pay with their life, as their work is lost
This war is for freedom, you want them to lose
Justice is a cost, paid for by your rule
We all die, when we live
This adversity is not for naught
Humanitarian Advocacy is to be every-man’s thought
Do you win, when you lose, all the care you do not give?

Do you win when they seek, justice just to live?

War at work

Historically when a war is declared both sides are expecting it. War is a reaction to someone trying to impose their belief, doctrine, power and might over another human being.  It is also to take away what belongs to someone else.
In the workplace when war is declared the employee  may only aware after the first attack.
When war is declared there must be a defense either to protect before attack or to defend after an attack is felt. ‘War’ is defined by Merriam –Webster online dictionary as:-
  1. “a state or period of fighting between countries or groups” (Merriam-Webster,2015/online)

My understanding leads me to think, it is unfair for a person to take on a company, institution, or country in a war. Yet this happens at work. This happens now. There is a war being waged by afflicted employees, where the possibility of surviving is a point of a percentage. The odds are stacked against that employee who must take on the organization, government and sometimes country.

Due to its length it has been divided into 2 parts; Humanitarian Advocacy 3 – The Real Cost of War & Justice (Part 2) highlights the losses in this war.

An Invitation..to follow!

Standard

The Exploration

Life is interesting. It can even be amazing, and that’s the way 2016 has been so far for me. This year has brought a newness which is quite adventurous in outlook. It is me in a different way. I can be all things I choose to be even in a state of physical repair.

As I find the me from before the new me present, I discovered….a big discovery…wait for it… wow.. I’m me. I’m still an overachieving  business woman / entrepreneur, who loves to make everyone happy. I’m thrilled with seeing smiles, and I am passionate about people and life.

Mentally, the flashbacks and memories of the horrible accident will remind me of a happening, I wish to forget. Physically my body says, “wait, you are broken.” I’m still here still standing ( or lying down most times), and I’m okay. I’m at the best place I can be today – and so are you! Thus my exploration into blogger’s universe has been like going to the moon – and I like it out there!

The Findings

Exploration will turn up new things, and new ways of seeing the same thing! I’ve discovered the following;

  • My posts  can be seen on as many platforms as I choose, and as often as I wish to share – I have control of this.
  • My audience is really wide, but mainly in the USA , Germany and Spain presently, but its growing – Over 20 countries consistently!
  • My followers like being notified when my posts are published – They are looking forward from many platforms
  • My blogging community is growing and the diversity is great – Wide range of reading – professional, social, business, fiction and so on.
  • Generating ‘traffick’ (my spelling!) is great with Google, Bebee, Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr and LinkedIn – Its been a three hose race between Google,Twitter and Bebee so far! I’m hoping an outsider can enter to keep the challenge up!
  • Blogging is much more than writing – Its interfacing and engaging with others who you hope will read. It’s sharing something you feel and hope will matter to someone!
  • You can make money with your personal blog – after six months of activity you can have adsense advertisements on your blog! That’s cool!
  • I like designing my look, even when there are no fees, I can personalize.

The Now

This is the world I live in now, and expecting my past to be my present will not move me forward. I love engaging with everyone, and it will take maybe a few months to build that rapport on my own site. I’m okay with change, but will you read me here and comment elsewhere sometimes? I will soon find out!

There is less available time for me now, but I’m ‘gung ho’!

My hand still swells with typing, my back and shoulder will spasm if I do more than 2 hrs at a time now, but this is me. This is my present time and I intend to enjoy every moment. What comes next I’m not sure, but I am D-Wordslayer and that will not change!

You will see my posts originating from these alternative sources, and I hope you will read and engage as you see them! My channel on Itai Lesham’s group will have all my post links henceforth!

I will continue to read, I love reading. Drop me a line, but please be patient. I’m here, just differently!

Drum roll – here is a special invitation to connect with me on Dwordslayer blogger or Donnaluisawordslayer Wordpress! I can also be contacted via emaildwordslayer@gmail.com

Jim Murray suggested posting a picture of myself at the end of every post, so he can take the credit for this crime 🙂 I went to the beach a few days ago and this shot I thought was good! Well there is another, so here is my bonus shot, and please blame someone else!

Now this is my favorite picture of all time. Taken when I was trying to get ready! Seems the fun things happen when we are not looking! I could only stay a short while, but it was worth it!

Thank you for engaging with me. Life is so beautiful. Live, live, live! This is my journey.

Got Smart – Social Media

Standard

Mobile phones got smart!

In 2009 I got my first Blackberry and I got smart. Suddenly, computers were more than email related, and mobile was the way a boyfriend should be – close by. They ‘the computers’ had strange things taking place which I could not see. My sons would go crazy with rolling eyes as my awe was filled with unknown fear and disgust. Strong words for strong feelings.  I’ll blame it on ‘the apps’ and the ‘imaginary people’ and those crazy ‘viruses that can crash metal & plastic’. That’s why I must start with the internet – a dragon to slay.

“You’re talking to the imaginary people again. When will you stop? I hope you are getting your school work done? They are not real; no one exists in a computer? This can’t be a game on a computer talking back at you, sounding human!”  My words were filled with annoyance to my sons, a regular conversation, which they chuckled at in despair at my archaic understanding.

Finally I discovered Facebook and Farmville and I got caught! Everyday, I had to wake up to water my plants, trade, etc. Secretly, my competitive drive kicked in and I wanted to beat the imaginary folks with high scores! My obsession, and addiction quickly taking over, making me one of them!

Fast forward- present day. I love the internet, and being connected on LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, Whats App, Hangouts, Google, Instagram, Periscope those I use a lot. I’m always searching for ways to improve and stay connected.  Blackberry had my heart and Samsung slipped right in and rocked me senseless into a relationship that keeps my love alive! I had to learn about the apps, the games, software, hardware, malware. Felt almost like a doctor with viruses and engineer troubleshooting, when my sons were not fast enough with the remedy. I learnt to save, and what to do when a crash occurs, but I’m yet to learn about programming – that’s next!

I can build a website, and run a business online. Yes, its all real to me now!

So here you are, this beautiful collage of people, a diversity of history and knowledge to rival Webster, Oxford & Wikipedia. You are real, because I feel you through words. I’m online and have joined the ‘smartphone smart-world’.

I’ve discovered communities I trust, and engage in conversations I may have never had. There is a lot for millennials to understand about change and how the older generation has been forced to adapt, almost like going to the moon. Indeed I was surprised to learn from my mom, she had an email address, she got at a cyber cafe! Mom can’t ever remember the password, but I’m thrilled she tried, even if secretly – but I understand.

Really, its about not being afraid of the unknown, and it is scary – technology!
I think there are many positive personal development opportunities with social media. Having a mobile smart-phone does make being social very present, real and available. I’ve found the following;

Twitter helps with brevity – get your message out with minimal words and for further reading there can be attachments. Follow, be followed, and try to interact with persons that share your interests. Develop your network as broadly as you like, but stay within your interests. Random following is just ‘crazy’.

LinkedIn helps with personal brand development – have your resume ready at all times and keep updating. Develop relationships with like minded professionals you would want to associate with publicly! Share, communicate, and add value to those in your network. Nurture relationships, while building your online visibility! Learn, read, get professional social!

Facebook helps to keep one connected across the board. Family, friends, and business ( careful with content if using for business, don’t mix personal intimate details). You can find most people and they CAN find you. It’s considered ‘revelation book’, snoop book, stalker book, CIA, FBI and anything else that indicates getting into other peoples business! It can be the ‘Jerry Springer’ of social media, and that’s not all good. It can also save lives, and create community!

The world is definitely smart and the discovery has made my life bigger than I thought possible. I can see, feel, and dream, reaching towards my creative best!

“Mom, what are you doing” my son asks “are you talking to those imaginary people again?” O dear, I just got busted, caught on Facebook / LinkedIn /Twitter!

Thank you for reading, liking, commenting and sharing! Let me know how you adapt to change with this social media world and how it influences your world!

Let’s Talk – The morning after…Carnival!

Standard

Cooling Down!

Carnival always ends with tired feet. Those feet which never walked a mile, will do many miles dancing, walking and even running to the rhythm of soca music. It makes me laugh just thinking about the physical preparation for carnival, and its ultimate end in a ‘cool down!

Baywatch is the name of the beach party this year. For many revelers taking the day off from work is expected. The feet and body need the ‘salt water’ and even more music to cool down! It’s beach party time and the roads going to the major beaches are packed with bumper to bumper traffic. Swimsuits, music, drinks, sun and sand….imagine!

Ash Wednesday

As a child we would head out to school on Ash Wednesday and line up to go to church. It was important to become clean again by acknowledging our sins and receiving our ashes on the forehead. To my little mind, it was okay to have fun, and then ask for forgiveness. It was expected, and even ritualistic. This was our way of life, our Trini way.

I love the beach, especially when there are not many people around. I’ve been to maybe two beach parties after carnival many years ago. Further exhaustion from the masquerade on the beach, but very satisfying.

Our carnival precedes lent, and with as much or more vigor as the revelers, our religious followers embark on the journey to repentance. The culture and heritage of our people is passionate, energizing and real.

There is a symbolic washing away of the past days, as we enter into our Lenten season – the end of the carnival season!

Let’s Talk: Carnival-Evolution or Revolution

Standard

Carnival Mas….

Carnival in Trinidad&Tobago is different now from when I was growing up. I have been around during the evolution and revolution of our culture, our mas. Evolution is about change. A revolution is the taking over of something which exists, making it different.

Getting ready to ‘play mas’ for J’ouvert starts on Carnival Sunday night, most times after a party. Arriving at the meeting point for 2:00am Monday morning and partying in the streets. The costumes for this event are covered in paint, mud or signs describing our local political or social controversies.

As the band, comprising ten to one thousand or more persons parade the streets, the steel-bands and DJ’s play music to ‘chip or trot/jump’ dance.

The Monday road party changes around noon as masqueraders return home and change into a part of their costume for Tuesday masquerade! The party continues until very late, sometimes stopping after 10pm.

Tuesday comes and the city comes alive. Everyone makes their way to a major city, for the road parade. Port of Spain is the main city, and its where over fifty thousand revelers adorned in full costume are ready. They all want to pass the ‘big’ stage in the Queens Park Savannah. The dance starts and goes non stop until midnight. This is how we party. This is how Trinidadians have fun. The spectators line the streets and mingle within the masquerade bands. Everyone dances, even children.

There are many discussions about whether we have gotten better and improved our carnival. The older folks think maybe we have lost ‘our’ perspective on what makes ‘real mas’. Others, the younger folks believe its a great revolution of creativity. I have played mas many times. The masquerade is an experience which one should know to understand how it affects our society. I love costumes, and becoming a different character to dance and party on the road – our streets, our stage.

A couple years ago I discovered a picture of me playing mas when I was 20 years old and at the time my costume was considered risque. As my kids looked at the picture they said, “mom that’s a lot of costume!” I laughed, I recalled the costumes now, many are beads, feathers and adornments for swimming suits, with a headpiece. My son, chuckled and advised some women have started using pasties and body paint. In fact, I did see this a couple days later in our daily newspaper.

The YouTube video above is the best illustration of what will be seen for carnival 2016 ongoing as I write.

Machel Montano has been making music from a very early age. He has won, the Soca King of the world many times. His music, is quite similar to zouk – a French Antilles  tempo. It invokes rhythmic sensuality and Machel Montano never misses a beat! His lyrics are mostly about revelry, culture and freedom of happiness and enjoyment!

I would love to see more costumes and less swimsuits.. simply because it is exciting to capture the story. It’s also good to be in character, as acting the dance creates something for the imagination to dream about. The creativity and the designers have this challenge. Give the people what they prefer (nudity) or tell the story and maybe the economics will be affected. Innovation is good, mas is good, storytelling is our culture!

Trinidad&Tobago a destination for carnival!

Sales – You’re kidding….right!

Standard

Why sales as a career?

I’ve been searching through my thousands of pictures from over the years for a post. Its taken me down memory lane. I’m quite pleased to have done so much, seen so many places, and experienced a life full of changes. I’m thinking about sales and how wonderful a career it is, for those brave enough to jump in!

Sales.. what makes a man wake up every day, and go out to work?

Why do you shop at the same supermarket, and go to the same green grocer weekly?

Why do you dream of the car you are not driving or the house you saw on the corner of your street?

There is one thing which happens daily as we hustle to wake and get a move on it – Sales.

As a child I swore I did not want to be a sales woman. No way. I was going to be an accountant or a lawyer. Something that sounded traditional, and filled with money & success! It seemed to find me – this desire to promote, persuade, coax and ultimately sell.

As a child I discovered folks liked to hear me speak. Before I was ten years old, I was busy negotiating, and swapping what I had, for what I wanted. A trader – never, I thought, though my family members always seemed to think I had ‘the gift of the garb’.

Now here I am thirty plus years’ experience at all levels of sales, covering Dental Supplies & Equipment,  Medical, Pharmaceutical, Film, Graphics Supplies, Inks, Machinery, Generators, Ventilation Fans & Systems, Shower Heaters, FMCG, services and a few other things. The bottom line is I love people, so I have to love sales. When I’m asked ‘what is your business?” my answer is first, “I’m in the business of people. Buyers and sellers, those are the people I interact with. I’m either selling, buying or planning, and it’s the most pleasurable feeling I can get while working!

I also love seeing people smile, and resolving difficult customer situations. Why not, everyone needs some sunshine in their day. Thus over the years, it’s been an exciting journey moving from each level of business yet remaining true to my business of people.

The Secret of sales..

There is a secret I’m going to share and I promise it works- if you try it, when dealing with people. Everyone wants something to make them happy today? Find out what that is, and let the person talk about it. Sharing dreams is a way to connect.

I recall visiting an energy company, and the safety manager responsible for making a decision, tabled a proposal for months before I joined this machinery firm. We wanted to sell them golf cars for internal transportation, and it was not high up on his list of decisions. Now this is my first day meeting this guy Stan, and I ask him about himself. He seemed like an introvert, but a courteous guy. So he starts and as I ask questions he opens up. Then its time to discuss my visit, and he asks , “how can I help you?”. Thus my bingo moment begins – and I left with a list of questions and concerns about the offer. That sale was closed in 2 visits. No one believed it could happen, and there was speculation that maybe I got lucky. Well, if repeating that over and over is luck, you need to make it a habit!

People go out to work, earn money to buy or pay for stuff, to make their lives  more comfortable. People will seek out the same place on a regular basis when there is something of value which makes them want to return. It can be in an outlet or online, remember this – received value keeps customers coming back.

You dream about the house and car that you want to spend the money you earn on- and a salesman is there helping you spend it. The sale must take place either through an online purchase system or the showroom. I can assure being a career salesman is an honorable and noble profession, with benefits that are limited only by self. His role may change, but as long as there is the desire for acquisition- we are here – ‘The Salesmen’.

I’ve been able to live my dreams, while learning about people, and what makes us who we are. Wow, what a career – Sales, and people go together, and that’s a reason to smile daily!

What is it about your day that makes you smile while you work or interact with people?

Thank you for reading! This is from my life experiences. I look forward to your feedback – like, comment, share with others.

Let’s Talk: It’s Carnival – Trinidad&Tobago Style!

Standard

Carnival…

There is no other carnival anywhere in the world like Trinidad&Tobago! Its about a total release of  music, rhythms, masquerading, showmanship, freedom of expression and culture!

Just that word in passing can conjure up dancing in the streets. The total abandonment of social conformity takes over as men, women and children dance to the sounds of the steel-pan and soca artists & calysonians!

Ahhh, there is that music… this how it feels!

Masqueraders are in costumes which are gaily colored. Some are fully clothed but many are two piece swimsuits with glitter, feathers and beads adorning the bodies of the actors..’all players of the mas’. I have been there and the feeling is exhilarating, unlike any you will ever feel unless you are in Trinidad for Carnival. Anyone can ‘play mas’, by registering with a ‘band’ and approximately nine hundred USD!

Music flows at the highest frequency. The beat moves and everyone synchronizes movement. It is an inbuilt sensory of a vibe, a feeling. Our soca artists can stir crowds with a single beat and song. Social commentary takes over when Calypsonians both old and young express and incite revelry !

The season starts at the beginning of the calendar new year, but preparation starts from a few months after each carnival season. On the Saturday before Carnival Monday and Tuesday – always two days before Ash Wednesday- children take over the streets, masquerading in costumes. Our junior steel-bands are there together with the music DJs all lining the streets of Port of Spain and other cities nationwide .

It begins.. it is here! Our culture, our Carnival – Trinidad & Tobago! Join me for a cultural fiesta of sharing over the next few days.

Share your feedback and any topics you’d like to have covered. Let’s talk Trinidad & Tobago carnival!
